GW2 Raid & Strike Builds

Raid and strike builds work best when the squad understands who provides damage, boons, healing, control, and mechanics. Start with the role the group needs, then choose a build that can perform that job consistently.

The briefing

Learn the essentials

Start with these foundations, then use the detailed lessons below to turn them into habits.

Core lesson

Read the squad role first

Before choosing a build, identify the slot you are filling: damage, boon support, healing, or a mechanic-heavy utility role. A strong build is only useful when it matches the squad plan.

  • ✦Confirm your requested role
  • ✦Check boon coverage
  • ✦Know your subgroup

Core lesson

Match the damage model to the encounter

Power and condition builds can both be excellent, but phase length, movement, target swapping, and invulnerability windows change how each one feels.

  • ✦Check burst windows
  • ✦Consider target movement
  • ✦Choose the build you can execute cleanly

Core lesson

Keep encounter utility flexible

Crowd control, stability, reflects, cleanses, portals, ranged pressure, and mobility can matter more than a small benchmark difference.

  • ✦Reserve one flexible utility slot
  • ✦Bring crowd control
  • ✦Adapt before the ready check

Deep knowledge

The field manual

Field manual

Damage builds still have responsibilities

A DPS slot is not permission to ignore mechanics. Reliable damage comes from staying alive, keeping uptime, moving correctly, and helping with encounter checks such as breakbars or target swaps.

When comparing two damage builds, choose the one you can play consistently in the real encounter. A slightly lower theoretical ceiling can outperform a harder build if movement or mechanics repeatedly break its rotation.

Field manual

Boon support must cover the squad plan

A boon-support build is responsible for more than its personal damage. The squad needs reliable uptime on the requested boons, usually while the support player also contributes damage, utility, or healing.

Positioning matters because many support skills have limited range or target caps. Stay with your subgroup, learn when your boon application happens, and avoid drifting away during important phases.

Field manual

Healers protect mechanics, not mistakes forever

A raid or strike healer keeps the squad stable with healing, cleansing, defensive boons, and recovery tools, but the role is strongest when players still respect mechanics.

Save large defensive cooldowns for predictable pressure when possible. If the encounter demands special utility such as stability, projectile defense, or frequent condition cleanse, adjust the build before the pull.

Field manual

One encounter can justify one utility swap

Published builds give you a stable foundation. Encounter-specific adjustments should usually change the smallest part of the setup needed to solve the problem.

Swap a utility or trait for a clear reason, test it, and keep the core role intact. This preserves muscle memory while still letting the build answer unusual mechanics.
