Deep knowledge
Field manual
Tier 1 is not a race to escape. It is where you learn the core Fractal encounters, practice moving with a five-player group, and become comfortable with encounter calls. A player who understands a fight is more useful than one who rushed into a higher tier without preparation.
Move to the next tier when the current one feels familiar. Ask your group what went well, notice what caused each downstate, and make one small improvement on the next run.
Field manual
Agony is a special Fractal effect that becomes more demanding at higher tiers. Agony Resistance from infusions in Ascended gear helps you survive it. You do not need a full perfect set immediately: build toward the resistance your next goal requires.
Instabilities are extra rules applied to many runs. Read them before entering and ask how they change the encounter. A simple adjustment, such as saving a condition cleanse or standing closer to allies, can make a difficult instability manageable.
